Last night our old cat Aatu died. He was very sickly already, and quite old so it was predictable.
But it was very heartbreaking to see his small skinny body lying there, with a glazed look in his eyes, and when I touched his ear - that was one way I used to tease him with - it did not move.
I can't believe it's so long ago when we got him... Over ten years ago? I can't remember it all that well.
We adopted the castrated fella from a family with children allergic to cats. At first he was very timid, hiding behind furnitures, but later he got used to us.
He would smack the dog's nose with his claws, sleep in our beds, run around the house... And run away for several times although he always came back unharmed. Me and my sisters grew up with him, just like with old German Shepherd Ötö who died of age years ago. (it was mostly her nose he'd like to smack with his claws)
But lately he had lost a lot of weight because of hyperthyroidism... He was more passive than ever. He would spend time in the kitchen, and come visit me and my sister ~Seraphy's room upstairs once in a while.
His bony little body wasn't very nice to cuddle anymore, but at least he was still able to purr and show his affection otherwise...
And last night my sister cried from the kitchen that he wasn't moving...
...Rest in peace, Aatu.

I grew up with a cat called Mbootoo - my parents got her a year before I was born - so she was always there... until she died when I was 18 ...so I can imagine something of how you feel right now.
